From Andover to Florence: a virtual walk in memory of Loki
Darren takes on epic walks in memory of grandson
Darren Cooper is halfway through his virtual challenge to walk the 1,234 miles from his home in Andover to Florence, Italy. The miles for the walk will take place locally in Andover and is in memory of his grandson Loki, who died from SUDEP a year ago, aged 18.
Darren said: “It came as a terrible shock to all of us and we miss him so much. SUDEP Action has been a great support to Vik, Loki’s mum, and I wanted to do something to show our appreciation.”
The challenge began at the end of April this year and the goal is to complete the walk in March 2027, finishing on Darren’s 65th birthday. His plan is to cover at least 30 miles a week, split into four or five local walks. He said: “I’m really enjoying it. I invested in some good walking shoes and clothes to suit most types of weather. The hot summer was quite challenging at times, and I needed to complete my walks early to avoid the worst of the heat. I’m actually looking forward to the cold and wet walks to come in the autumn and winter.”
Darren is pleased with his progress so far having completed 633 miles of his challenge. “On the map I’m approaching Lyon and then I’ll be heading for the Med. It’s good to be ahead of schedule.”
Florence was chosen as the final stop of the challenge as the family love their holidays there. Darren said: “I have a keen interest in Italian wines so it seemed a natural choice for Florence to be my virtual destination, I took the excuse to try examples of the local wines on my journey.”
Darren remembers Loki as very caring and kind-hearted. He said: “Loki was a smashing grandson. His dream was to join the army, and he had a passion for anything to do with the military. It amazed us just how much he knew about the subject! Losing him has left a big Loki-shaped hole in our lives, but we are lucky to have so many lovely memories of him.”
“Sometimes when I’m out walking, I imagine him beside me, although he’d probably prefer to take the bus – he wasn’t that keen on walking far!”
Finding something you enjoy doing is Darren’s advice for anyone looking to take part in fundraising for SUDEP Action. He also suggests keeping track of your progress which can really help you keep focused on your challenge. However, the biggest drive for him has been the support of others. He said: “A great motivation for me has been the sponsorship and encouragement I’ve received from friends. It’s been lovely to have their support to help me on my way.”
