Running the Great North Run in Memory of Andy

Over £7,000 raised in memory of Lucy Grant in Mighty Stride Kiltwalk.

In September we have 14 incredible supporters taking part in the Great North Run. One of our runners is Kim Mcentee who has shared her story about why she is running in memory of her brother Andy.

“This year, I’m taking on the Great North Run for a cause that means so much to me.

I’ll be running in memory of my brother, Andy, who sadly died from Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) in November 2021.

Andy was truly the life and soul of every party. He had an incredible sense of humour, loved making people laugh, and was always planning his next practical joke on friends or family. He brought joy wherever he went.

More than anything, Andy adored his nieces. He loved spending time with them and was always trying to teach them something new, whether that was skateboarding, coding, or even how to play a kazoo. He had a wonderful way of making every moment fun and memorable.

Since losing Andy, I’ve always said I wanted to take on a challenge in his honour. For me, there is no better challenge than running the Great North Run in our local area, surrounded by the communities and places that mean so much to us.

A few years ago, I started running again with friends and quickly discovered the physical and mental benefits it brings. Since signing up for the Great North Run, my friends and I have committed to training three times a week, fitting runs around busy family lives and work commitments. Many mornings start before sunrise so we can get a long run in before the day begins.

Having friends alongside me on this journey has been a huge source of motivation and inspiration. We all have our own reasons for fundraising and sharing those stories while training together has made this challenge even more meaningful.

I’m proud to be raising money for SUDEP Action, an incredible charity that supports people affected by epilepsy, provides life-saving information, and works tirelessly to prevent epilepsy-related deaths.

If you’re thinking about fundraising for SUDEP Action, my message is simple: do it. Every pound raised helps support a truly worthy cause and makes a difference to families like mine.

Andy’s memory inspires me every step of the way, and I’ll be carrying him with me all 13.1 miles on race day.

💜 In memory of Andy. Forever loved, forever missed.
