“Taking part is very important to me as I feel raising money for this charity is vital to the progression of research and bereavement support” says Amy Goodbrand (pictured above, right), one of our incredible supporters who has already signed up for a My Way to 5K challenge this year. Amy is walking in memory of her close friend Elissa. She said that SUDEP Action “has supported myself and many close to me as we lost Elissa at only aged 18”. She adds “I will be taking part in the My Way to 5K on the 5th October with my mum. We are going to go to a park and go for a nice little walk!”

The My Way to 5K challenge takes place annually between 1st October – 20th alongside SUDEP Action Day which is now in its tenth year on Wednesday 16th October 2024. You can complete the challenge in any way you wish, whether that’s running, swimming, cycling or a simple walk with friends. Providing an opportunity to raise the awareness of epilepsy risks or remember a loved one or special person who has lost their life to epilepsy.

Tara Cooper is running every day in October in memory of her cousin Sarah Pearmain as part of her My Way to 5K Challenge. “We lost Sarah in March…leaving her husband, two kids, sister and masses of family and friends.” Before Sarah passed away, Tara says that she “didn’t know you could die of a seizure” and admits it was a big shock. Tara (pictured above, left) chose to set herself such a huge challenge as Sarah herself also enjoyed running. She decided “I want to give something back as well” and chose to do a My Way to 5K challenge with “Sarah on my shoulder” in her memory.

The theme for this year’s SUDEP Action Day is #OurRisksOurRights and shines a light on the risks of those living with epilepsy as well as the rights of anyone affected by the condition, including those bereaved through epilepsy. Because every person living with epilepsy has a right to be told about the risks that come with the condition – as well as a right to early diagnosis and access to information, medication and care.
