Running the London Marathon in memory of Charlotte Iceton

“I've never been involved in anything like that. You know, everyone just supporting you.”

On Sunday 27th April a record-breaking 56,640 runners participated in the London Marathon completing the 26.2 mile course around the capital city. Jamie Plummer was one of those runners, taking part in aid of SUDEP Action and raising £785 for the charity.

Jamie’s fundraising was in memory of Charlotte Iceton, a close friend to him and his partner who passed away due to epilepsy in 2017 when she was only 25 years old. Jamie remembers that Charlotte was always smiling and said “It was such a shock when obviously everyone got the sad news at the time, it was difficult, but obviously it’s just about remembering in all the positive ways now and these sort of events and fundraisers…They help us to do that.”

The London Marathon wasn’t Jamie’s first fundraiser for SUDEP Action having already supported the charity through football matches in 2018 as well as hiking Snowden in 2019 with some other close friends of Charlotte. Jamie wanted to be a part of the marathon as he has always been a keen runner having previously run half marathons and 10k runs. He was then accepted through the London Marathon ballot system and chose to run for the charity.

Jamie said “I’ve never been involved in anything like that. You know, everyone just supporting you…It was probably one of the best things I’ve ever done…it’s probably the best thing, but also the worst thing I’ve done as well, just because of the pain threshold you go through”

“When you set the achievement and looking back and realise what you’ve done and how far you’ve run it’s crazy, but…you don’t sort of feel that until a few days after and then you actually sit back and look at pictures, videos…and then you’re wow, you know…it’s an amazing event.”

Jamie’s advice to anyone looking to run the marathon for SUDEP Action would be to “Just go out and enjoy it, really. Obviously, it’s for raising money for an amazing cause as well, but just to not really concentrate on goal times. I was focused on obviously an end time and then halfway through…I took my headphones out and just took in the atmosphere and then…tried to enjoy the occasion as well.”

SUDEP Action have four places up for grabs in the London Marathon in 2026. If you would like to be considered for a place then you can fill out the form here.
