Taking care at Christmas

The lead up to Christmas has started and, regardles of what you watch on TV or read in your newspaper, where you shop or what you look at on social media, it seems to become more visible, much earlier each year.

Christmas and the New Year is not necessarily a merry and joyous time for everyone, it can ignite painful memories and reminders of what you have lost. Although every day can be challenging, there are certain times of the year that can be particularly difficult and the Christmas season is often one of them.

Advance planning of these days and telling family and friends what you can and cannot do / cope with can be hard but helpful. Remember, it’s OK to say no; your needs come first.

Some people arrange to do something different rather than traditional; others may celebrate Christmas and the New Year in a bigger and better way than previous, as the person they lost loved it so much. Ultimately it is all about what is best for you.

Please remember to be kind to yourself, and try not to put yourself under too much pressure.

The support line at SUDEP Action is open through the build-up to Christmas. Don’t go through it on your own, we are here to help in any way we can.
